Indian Head Massage

What is Indian Head Massge?


Indian Head Massage is a treatment that focuses on massaging acupressure points along the head, neck, and shoulders, often using circular massage strokes to improve hair and scalp condition.


It originates from an Indian alternative medicine system called Ayurveda, (translated as the ‘science of life’), whereby it is believed that the mind and body are intricately connected and thus can influence one another. Through this theory, is is understood that Indian head massage can not only reduce headaches and improve physical well-being, but it can also improve mental and emotional wellness too.


How does Indian Head Massage  work?


 An Indian head massage is considered a method of cleansing and healing. The massage technique uses controlled movements and has a strong effect on the three higher chakras – the mind, body, and spirit.  

An Indian head massage includes various techniques like friction, tapping, rotation, stretching and so on. 

It starts with the shoulders and upper back, then gradually moves onto the arms and finally the head, scalp and face. During the massage, I use different techniques like:

  • Knead and probe the neck and shoulder areas.
  • Massage the scalp using squeezing, tapping, or rubbing motions.
  • Use facial pressure points to relieve sinus pressure.
  • Press and tug on the ears.

  • Aiding the release of emotions and relief of repressed feelings. Can trigger a ‘letting go process’.
  • Improves circulation, increasing nutrition to the cells and encourages cell regeneration.
  • Aiding relation which is turn has a positive effect on some stress related skin and scalp conditions and may include alopecia, dandruff, psoriasis, eczema.
  • Improving muscle tone and helping maintain elasticity of flexibility of muscle fibres.
  • Promotes rapid removal of waste products, lactic acid, and toxins, reducing muscle fatigue and soreness.
  • Reduces pain by stimulating the release of the body’s endorphins. Known as ‘feel good factor’ which elevates mood.
  • Eases tension headaches.
  • Slows down the rate of respiration due to the stimulation of this sympathetic nervous system.
